“Ode to the West Wind” is one of the most famous and powerful poems written by Percy Bysshe Shelley. He was  one of the leading Romantic poets of the 19th century. The poem was written in 1819 and published in 1820. This Poem is an ode — a lyrical poem that expresses deep emotion and admiration. In this poem, Shelley speaks directly to the West Wind, treating it as a living spirit, a powerful force of nature that can both destroy and create.

The West Wind symbolizes change, inspiration, and transformation. It destroys the old and lifeless things, but it also helps in creating new life by spreading seeds for the spring. The poem is divided into five cantos (sections). हे जंगली पश्चिमी पवन! तू पतझड़ के जीवन की साँस है,
तेरी अदृश्य उपस्थिति से मरे हुए पत्ते
जैसे किसी जादूगर से डरकर भागते प्रेत हों, उड़ जाते हैं।

पीले, काले, पीले-लाल और रक्तिम —
जैसे किसी महामारी से ग्रस्त भीड़।
हे तू, जो उन बीजों को उनके अंधेरे शीतकालीन बिस्तर पर ले जाता है,

जहाँ वे ठंडी मिट्टी में पड़े रहते हैं,
जैसे शव अपनी कब्रों में सोए हों,
जब तक तेरी नीली बहन वसंत नहीं आती,

जो धरती पर अपनी तुरही बजाकर जगाती है
और मैदानों व पहाड़ियों को रंगों और खुशबुओं से भर देती है।
हे जंगली आत्मा, जो हर जगह गतिमान है —
विनाशक भी, और रक्षक भी — मेरी पुकार सुनो!

तू, जिसके प्रवाह पर आकाश में हलचल मचती है,
और ढीले बादल धरती के सड़े पत्तों की तरह उड़ते हैं,
जो स्वर्ग और सागर की उलझी डालियों से हिलकर गिरते हैं —

हे वर्षा और बिजली के देवदूत!
तेरी नीली लहरों पर वे बादल फैले हुए हैं,
जैसे किसी उन्मत्त स्त्री के सिर से उठे चमकते बाल।

क्षितिज की सीमा से लेकर आकाश के शिखर तक,
तेरे तूफान के बाल बिखरे हैं।
हे वर्ष के अंत का शोकगीत गाने वाले!
आज की यह रात तेरी समाधि की छत होगी —

तेरे संगठित वाष्पों से बनी हुई विशाल गुंबदाकार छत,
जहाँ से काला वर्षा, आग और ओले बरसेंगे —
हे पश्चिमी पवन! मेरी पुकार सुनो!

हे तू, जिसने अपनी शक्ति से
भूमध्य सागर को उसकी नींद से जगाया,
जहाँ वह गर्मियों में स्वच्छ लहरों की गोद में सोया था,

और अपने स्वप्नों में देखता था
पुराने महल और मीनारें, जो जल में झिलमिला रही थीं —
नीली काई और फूलों से ढकी हुईं।

इतनी सुंदर थीं वे कि कल्पना भी मुरझा जाए।
और तू, जिसके मार्ग से अटलांटिक महासागर
अपना स्तर चीरकर खाइयाँ बनाता है,

जहाँ नीचे सागर के फूल और कीचड़ भरे जंगल,
तेरी आवाज़ सुनकर डर से धूसर हो जाते हैं,
काँपते हैं और स्वयं को उजाड़ लेते हैं —
हे पवन! मेरी पुकार सुनो!

काश मैं भी एक मरा हुआ पत्ता होता, जिसे तू उड़ा ले जाता;
या एक बादल, जो तेरे संग उड़ता;
या लहर, जो तेरे बल से हिलती, तेरी शक्ति में भागीदार होती।

काश, मैं अपने बचपन की तरह फिर से आज़ाद होता,
जब मैं तेरे साथ आकाश में उड़ सकता था,
जब तेरी गति से आगे निकलने का सपना देखता था।

अब मैं तेरे सामने प्रार्थना में झुका हूँ,
हे पश्चिमी पवन! मुझे भी उठा ले —
एक लहर, एक पत्ता, एक बादल बनाकर!

जीवन के काँटों पर गिरकर मैं लहूलुहान हूँ।
समय का भारी बोझ मुझे झुका चुका है।
मैं भी तेरी तरह था — निडर, तेज, और गर्वित!

मुझे अपना वीणा बना ले, जैसे जंगल तेरी वीणा है;
भले ही मेरे पत्ते गिर रहे हों,
पर तेरे प्रचंड संगीत से मेरे स्वरों में भी गहराई आ जाएगी।

तेरा उग्र स्वर, उदासी में भी मधुर है।
हे प्रचंड आत्मा! तू मेरा आत्मा बन जा!
मुझे अपनी शक्ति से भर दे!

मेरे मृत विचारों को ब्रह्मांड में उड़ा दे,
जैसे सूखे पत्तों को तू उड़ाता है,
ताकि वे नए जीवन को जन्म दें!

मेरी इन कविताओं के मंत्र से
